Automotive industry standards precisely define the determination sides of the vehicle, and the main determinant is the position of the driver. So, to properly determine side of the vehicle, you must get behind the wheel, or stand at the back of the vehicle while looking forward as if you were sitting behind the wheel.
The best way to show this in a graphical manner is a snapshot at the vehicle from the top (see figure 1). As shown on the picture it is easy to see where the Left Front, or the Right Rear is.
If you look at your vehicle from the front, you always have to remember that sides will be reversed (see figure 2).
If you look at the back of your vehicle, there's no confusion at all. Left is on the left hand, and Right is on the right hand side (see figure 3).
For the Right Hand Drive vehicles - RHD - Left Side is always a Passenger Side, also called Near Side N/S (near the kerb).
For all Left Hand Drive vehicles - LHD - Left Side means driver's side, also called Off Side O/S (off the kerb).
For the Right Hand Drive vehicles - RHD - Right Side is a driver's side, also called Off Side O/S (off the kerb).
For all Left Hand Drive vehicles - LHD - Right Side is always a Passenger Side, also called Near Side N/S (near the kerb).
